Travis Konecny could flourish with the pressure off him

Since Claude Giroux's departure in 2022, most of the weight of production fell on the shoulders of Travis Konecny. He just turned 25 and saw one of the most productive players ever to wear the Orange and Black leave town. While Sean Couturier was the locker room leader, it was up to Konecny to become the team's primary scoring threat.

Since then, Konecny has battled injuries and multiple head coaches. He has led the team in goals twice, assists three times, and has led in overall points in six of the last seven seasons. A lot has been put on his shoulders. After two straight seasons of scoring 30 goals, fans wanted him to break 40. As he etched closer to 70 points, which he finally did in 2024-25, fans wanted an 80-point season. No one was ever satisfied enough.

He didn't have a lot to work with, though. A lot of players kept getting hurt or traded. Morgan Frost, anyone? How about Joel Farabee? They both did okay in Philly when healthy, but later got traded to Calgary. But this isn't about them. This is about Konecny.

For years, he was playing as if he were the heir apparent to Giroux. In many ways, he might have been. After all, he's the only 30-goal scorer this team has had since Wayne Simmonds (Giroux did it just once). And even then, you gotta go back to Scott Hartnell, Daniel Briere, and Jeff Carter. It's been a while. But we always want more out of our stars. With Konecny, we saw the greatness he had locked within, and we wanted him to unleash it.

Konency won't admit it, but he probably put too much pressure on himself to succeed. He probably put the fortunes and failures of the team on his back and tried to rally the troops, much like Giroux or Simmonds used to. 

Here's the thing. He doesn't have to do it all by himself now. He is starting to be surrounded by younger, fresher, hungrier talent. Players like Matvei Michkov, Porter Martone, and Tyson Foerster can take some of the load off of him. He has help. He doesn't have to carry the burden anymore. The Flyers could potentially have three scoring lines, depending on who is matched up with whom. Konecny can relax a bit.

If Konecny can relax a little and not stress out about doing all of the work, he's gonna have a breakout year. An 80-point season with 40 goals might not be out of the question for him, again depending on who he is paired up with. Even if his goal totals are down, his assist production could easily increase.

This could be a career year for Konecny. And if he has a career year, that will trickle down elsewhere. This could become one of the best Flyers seasons in recent memory if all goes well.
