Trevor Zegras scores while blindfolded in skills competition

Man, what a bunch of fun that was.

The Average Joes, Alan from the Hangover, magic acts, and a whole lot more.

It’s hard to walk away from the 2022 All-Star game with anything but a smile on a night the league desperately needed. The talent and skill were on full display, as was the oozing personality of some of the game's young stars.

It kicked off with the fastest skater competition, where Jordan Kyrou was a surprise winner. Surely, nobody had any other winners … right? Everyone and their mother expected Connor McDavid to win, but he placed fourth at a narrow 0.14 seconds behind Kyrou.

Next up was the save streak contest, where the Atlantic Division’s Jack Campbell and Andrei Vasilevsky made nine stops in a row — six more than the Pacific’s Thatcher Demko and John Gibson.

The fountain face-off was a blast, but having to watch the players light up the pucks was … weird? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for them to just be able to shoot? Nonetheless, Roman Josi (11.855 seconds) and Zach Werenski (15.16) took the top two spots in the first round, with the latter beating the former by 22 seconds to win the top prize.

In the hardest shot competition, there was really no major surprise. Victor Hedman took the top spot with a 103.2-mph clapper, a full mile per hour over Adam Pelech, who took the second spot.

The best part of the night was easily the breakaway challenge. Man, what an absolute blast. I loved to see the creativity from Trevor Zegras, breaking out the Average Joe’s uniform from one of my favorite movies of all time, Dodgeball. Zegras scored blindfolded (!!!) on his chance, and it was followed up by some more fun antics.

Alex DeBrincat came out as Alan from the Hangover, and Jack Hughes’ magic act was just as fun. Even Carrot Top made an appearance!

And how about Kirill Kaprisov paying homage to fellow countryman Alex Ovechkin? I think that was so cool to see.

But let’s be real here — Jon Hamm putting 19 points up for Alex Pietrangelo?! That’s a tough scene.

The Blackjack game on the strip was fun to see, too. With Vegas being famous for its gambling, it was nice to see the NHL embrace it as a part of the All-Star game. More and more are we seeing the league grow open to betting, and this was just another step forward in that aspect. And at the end of the day, it highlights the accuracy that these players were able to hit their cards, too, with Joe Pavelski eventually getting the W.

The final event of the night was the accuracy shooting competition, with Sebastian Aho taking home the top spot while going four-for-four and busting them in an impressive 10.937.
