Two former 100-point scorers face different paths with the Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars will enter the 2025-26 season with two proven 100-point players on the roster, but both are facing pressure for very different reasons, and the outcome could shape how far this team goes.

Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen are two of the most talented wingers in the NHL, but they're arriving at training camp with two completely different narratives.

For Robertson, this season is make-or-break.

After a 109-point breakout in 2022-23, expectations soared. But since then, his production has dipped and his playoff performances have raised questions.

Now with a contract year ahead, the conversations around his future in Dallas are heating up.

"There's still a belief that Robertson can be that guy again,"
one league executive told The Hockey News.
"But the consistency just hasn't been there."

Injuries haven't helped. Robertson hasn't looked fully healthy in some stretches, and when he does come back, it usually takes him time to regain form.

He may not be the flashiest skater, but his playmaking and finishing ability are elite when he's locked in.

Dallas will need that version of Robertson, especially with a cap decision looming.

Why Mikko Rantanen's expectations are even higher with the Dallas Stars

Rantanen, on the other hand, is already one of the highest-paid players in the league at $12 million per year.

He didn't hit 100 points last season, but he still led the Stars in scoring after arriving via trade from Colorado.

He's been a playoff performer his whole career, and that's where Dallas hopes he'll shine again.

"We know what Rants can do when it counts," a Stars coach said in an off-season radio hit. "We need that version of him this year, from Game 1 through May."

With Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, and Matt Duchene aging, and limited depth scoring left in the bottom six, Rantanen will have to carry a heavier load.

I honestly think this is the most important regular season Robertson has had since entering the league.

It's not just about points, it's about showing he can lead when it matters.

And if both of these stars shine the way they can, Dallas might finally make that last step to a Stanley Cup Final.
