Update On Aleksander Barkov

Aleksander Barkov could potentially have another big lower-body injury to heal.

This stems from Barkov skating straight off the ice while his Florida Panthers were down 2-0 to the San Jose Sharks as they were trying to climb back in the middle of the second period on the power-play. While Barkov was attempting to protect possession on the near-side corner boards, Darnell Nurse and Zack Ostapchuk approached to defend the Florida captain, where the Russian center awkwardly went down on his left knee while he appeared to grab his ankle. Barkov did not return to the team’s 4-3 overtime loss.

According to multiple reporters, including Panthers rinkside reporter Katie Engleson, head coach Paul Maurice said the injury is unrelated to the injury he sustained last season. An update should be provided sometime later today regarding his status moving forward, according to Pierre LeBrun, Barkov is set to get an MRI later today. This was his second game of the season, after playing over 20 minutes in the team’s season opener against the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, a 1-0 overtime win.

Last year, on the first day of Panthers training camp, after a low-speed collision with teammate Niko Mikkola, Barkov sustained an injury to his right leg, causing him to miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season to repair his ACL and MCL.  The surgery occurred a day after, and he was given a recovery time between seven and nine months.  The short end of that timeline would potentially give him a chance of returning in the second round of the playoffs while the long end would mean that he would miss the entire postseason as well.

Alas, the Panthers missed Barkov severely for that entire year, dropping to 84 points from a prior triumph of two consecutive Stanley Cup victories. That was a franchise low in points that the team hadn’t seen in a full 82-game campaign since the 2018-19 season, his first season as a captain and of seven consecutive years of above point-per-game production. The 31-year-old did return over the summer to represent his native Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Championships, elevating them to a gold medal at the tournament from an 11-point performance over 10 games.

Barkov has been a large presence in the team’s success, and after being the team’s second overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft, he has gone on to become the franchise’s all-time scoring leader, with 782 points in 806 regular-season games. En route to two championships, add 81 points in 94 playoff games, and three Selke trophies in 2021, 2024, and 2025 as the best defensive forward in the league.

He entered this season on the fifth year of an eight-year, $80MM contract signed back in October of 2021. He’ll be age-34 when the deal expires. Currently, Barkov’s $10MM AAV takes up just 9.62% of the Panthers’ overall cap hit. So if an injury were to unfortunately force him on injured reserve
