The Utah Mammoth have made a significant addition to their future in goal, acquiring highly touted netminder Sebastian Cossa from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for the 23rd overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

The trade, first reported by Elliotte Friedman, gives Utah one of hockey’s top young goaltending prospects. Cossa, originally selected 15th overall by Detroit in the 2021 NHL Draft, has steadily developed into one of the premier goalie prospects in the league after several strong seasons in the AHL

For Utah, the move signals a commitment to building around a long-term franchise goaltender rather than selecting another prospect with the 23rd overall pick. At just 23 years old, Cossa possesses elite size, athleticism, and the upside to become a true No. 1 goaltender at the NHL level.

Meanwhile, Detroit adds another first-round selection in a deep 2026 draft, giving the organization additional flexibility to add young talent or potentially use the pick in another transaction.

The deal is one of the biggest draft-day moves so far and could have a lasting impact on both franchises depending on Cossa’s development in Utah.
