Filip Chytil just cannot catch a break. He has suffered multiple concussions throughout his career, and although his most recent injury does not appear to be one, he will once again be sidelined. Vancouver Canucks head coach Adam Foote revealed that Chytil will be out indefinitely with a facial bone fracture.

Chytil’s Injury and Concerns For His Future

The reason Chytil got injured is rather unfortunate and unlucky. During a Canucks practice at UBC, Brock Boeser slapped a puck off the glass, hitting Chytil in the face. Chytil left practice immediately and went for X-Rays. Foote mentioned that surgery is likely not necessary, but further consultation with specialists will be done.

The obvious concern for Chytil is his large injury history. Six concussions have been documented in his career. The Canucks faithful have expressed that Chytil should retire for the sake of his health, but Chytil seems to have no plans to do so. He has been sidelined four times during his tenure with the Canucks. The Canucks have played 88 games since they traded for Chytil with the New York Rangers, and Chytil has only played in 27 of them. In his last four seasons, he has only played 78 combined games, which is less than a full season’s worth.

Canucks Have a Lack of Centres Once Again

With Chytil out yet again, Vancouver is without their second-line centre again. The already injury-battered Canucks team will have to make do with this for likely the rest of the season. With the trade deadline approaching, more players may be departing relatively soon. Chytil is under contract with the Canucks for one more year after the current season, with a cap hit of $4.437 million. That is money that the Canucks will have to eat up for a while longer.

Vancouver returns to action from the Olympic break against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday, February 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
