Vancouver Canucks place Jack Studnicka, Chrisitan Wolanin on waivers

The Vancouver Canucks have placed Jack Studnicka and Christian Wolanin on waivers Sunday morning as a final round of roster cuts happen around the NHL.

Studnicka, 24, joined the Canucks in an October 2022 trade from the Boston Bruins that saw Vancouver send back Michael Dipietro and Jonathan Myrenberg. After joining the Canucks last year, Studnicka appeared in 47 NHL games scoring four goals and eight points. Vancouver gave him some good run in the pre-season as he drew in for five exhibition games, but didn’t score a point.

Despite his lack of production, Studnicka had a strong training camp for the Canucks this year and his placement caught some by surprise. In last week’s Mailbag, Faber wrote that he felt the 13th spot would be up for grabs between Studnicka and Dakota Joshua.

“This wouldn’t have been much of an argument but Joshua hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations this preseason and though he has improved, Joshua will need to show well in the final two preseason games,” Faber wrote. “It’s a three-horse race for the 13th forward spot in our eyes and it’s between Joshua, Åman, and Studnicka.”

Wolanin, meanwhile, joined the Canucks ahead of last season as a free agent, but saw the majority of his time with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. There, he appeared in 49 games scoring six goals and 55 points producing offence like he never had before. The 28-year-old saw some time in the NHL, scoring three assists in 16 games played.

The Canucks made another move Sunday acquiring forward Sam Lafferty from the Toronto Maple Leafs. A depth forward, he’s someone who could fill in well in a depth role for the Canucks this season.
