Washington Capitals’ Tom Wilson receives six-game suspension for high-sticking Leafs’ Noah Gregor
Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has announced that Washington Capitals forward has received a six-game suspension for slashing Toronto Maple Leafs winger Noah Gregor in the face on Wednesday.

Wilson was offered an in-person hearing for the action, opening him up for a suspension of six games or more. The incident occurred during the third period, with Wilson receiving a minor penalty for the play. The Leafs went on to win 7-3.

Wilson will be eligible to return to the Capitals’ lineup on against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 4.

Since breaking into the NHL in 2013, the Toronto native has been suspended five times, including three times during the 2017-18 season, getting banned for three games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Wilson was infamously suspended for 20 games during the 2018 preseason for a dirty hit on Oskar Sundqvist. The suspension was eventually reduced to 14 games. It was the last time the league either fined or suspended him.

Wilson has been separately fined three times as well.

Wilson has played his entire NHL career with the Caps since getting drafted 16th overall in 2012. Known for his more aggressive play style, Wilson quickly emerged as a fan favorite in Washington, which included helping the Caps win the Stanley Cup in 2018 on the heels of his playoff-leading 100 hits.

Wilson has 32 points and 120 penalty minutes in 66 games this season, which included a trip to Toronto to participate in the 2024 NHL all-star game. Wilson has 145 goals, 327 points and 1,419 penalty minutes in 746 games over 12 NHL seasons, as well as another 31 points in 83 games over nine playoff runs.

The Caps are set to take on Carolina at home on Friday night before hosting Winnipeg on Sunday. They’ll finish their home stand against Detroit on March 26 before once heading to Toronto for a chance at getting back at the Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday.
