Watch: Blue Jackets offense explodes in second period vs. Red Wings

It took a bit of time but the Columbus Blue Jackets had their cannons firing at will during their NHL Stadium Series battle with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Forward Denton Mateychuk scored the franchise's first goal in an outdoor game with a sick second period deke and score.

The 2025 edition of the NHL's Stadium Series was hosted at Ohio Stadium, the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. It's the first time the facility has hosted a professional hockey game.

After Detroit's Alex DeBrincat tied the game at 1-1, Columbus' offense pounced on some key defensive lapses for two goals scored in 32 seconds.

The Blue Jackets carried a 3-1 lead into the second intermission, looking to clinch a victory in its outdoor debut and further secure a wild-card playoff spot.

The game carries sentimental meaning for the team as well. Former teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed by an alleged drunken driver in 2024 along with his younger brother, was honored by both squads ahead of puck drop.

"To have the presence of Johnny with us in that setting ... you want to cry, you want to fight, and you want to get after it. So yeah, Johnny's with us here," head coach Dean Evason told ESPN Saturday.
