The Detroit Red Wings are desperate for a points boost in the standings as they vie for a playoff spot.
Forward Dylan Larkin understood the assignment and only needed 43 seconds to put his team on top against the Washington Capitals on Friday.
The 28-year-old captain took a shot from a severe angle and banked the puck off goaltender Logan Thompson's helmet into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The impressive tally was Larkin's 26th of the season, setting the pace early for the slumping Red Wings.
The loser of its last four games and only scoring eight times in that span, Detroit (66 points) sits fifth in the Atlantic Division but is only a single point out from the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Larkin's teammate Mo Seider extended Detroit's lead to 2-0 with a power play tally not long after the opening marker.
For now, a win over the red-hot Capitals would put the Red Wings back into the playoff bracket.
