Wayne Gretzky jersey sells for record $1.45M at auction

The last jersey Wayne Gretzky ever wore as a member of the Edmonton Oilers sold at auction on Sunday night for a record $1.45 million with Grey Flannel Auctions on Sunday night, eclipsing the $1.3 million previously paid for Paul Henderson's Summit Series jersey from 1972.

The Great One wore the sweater during Edmonton's 1988 Stanley Cup playoff run, which included a memorable Stanley Cup Final series against the Boston Bruins.

Edmonton defeated the Bruins in that series and Gretzky won his second Conn Smythe Trophy as Final MVP. Just a few months later, the Oilers traded him to the LA Kings.

ESPN reported the gloves Gretzky wore in the series-clinching game against Boston also sold at auction on Sunday night, for $204,162.

Gretzky, now 61, still holds the record for most career points (2,857), goals (894), and assists (1,963). He is currently serving as a TV analyst for "NHL on TNT" during the Stanley Cup playoffs, which currently features the Oilers facing off against the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs lead the series three games to none heading into Monday evening.
