Although the Toronto Maple Leafs executed a seismic trade 26 hours before the 2026-27 season opener, it may be a footnote in the longview of history. Welcome to the McKennaissance Era, where the 18-year-old phenom promises to usher in a new era of Maple Leafs hockey, while taking command of the larger Toronto sports ecosystem.

Gavin McKenna has been nationally famous since he was 14, and he commands scrums like a player ten years his senior. That may be immaterial, when compared to his on-ice prowess. McKenna’s electrifying playmaking and elusiveness already brought Scotiabank Arena to their feet during the preseason. One can only imagine the ovation he’ll receive when he scores his first goal, or leads the Maple Leafs to a playoff series victory, or hey, maybe even four.

“I think obviously the Maple Leafs making the playoffs. If we can get that done, I think that’s a good step,” McKenna said in a scrum full of reporters, following Monday’s practice. “If we can get that done, I think that’s a good step. When you have team success, I think that will lead to my self-success. If the team is doing good, I think that’s all that matters. It will come, I’m just hoping for the team to make the playoffs.”

McKenna sits calmly in his stall, flanked by Brandon Duhaime and Jack Roslovic, with linemate and landlord John Tavares nearby. You wouldn’t get the sense that he’s a rookie by the way he carries himself, and he’s brought a natural level of confidence to the Maple Leafs, who have been habitually accused of overthinking when the lights brighten during the playoffs.

“He’s just very comfortable in his own skin. That’s the way I see Gavin,” Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller said Monday. “And so I expect tomorrow it’ll be this big game. It’s exciting and all that, but I don’t think he’s going to overthink anything. He knows he’s a really good player. He’s got a lot of self-confidence in that.”

Hiller’s comments may ring prophetic. McKenna isn’t fazed by the circumstances, and he’s already wowed the Leafs beat with his poise and maturity since being selected first overall. This city and this town is dying for a hero. It may be premature to cast this expectation upon McKenna during his rookie year. In short order, this sports-crazed metropolis could belong to him, or maybe he’ll share that designation with Kawhi Leonard across the hall.

“We all know it ramps up into the regular season, but he’s the first overall pick for a reason,” Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka said of McKenna on Monday. “I think he showed a lot of those glimpses as to why. At the same time, he’s an 18-year-old kid and there’s going to be ups and downs. And we just hope we can support him through that and put him in a spot where both in the short-term and the long-term, he’s an important part for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But he’s done and delivered on everything so far that we could have expected.”

McKenna is a special player, and he’s already the Maple Leafs’ most important asset. Along with Easton Cowan, and the newly acquired Kirill Marchenko, McKenna is simultaneously the leader of Toronto’s younger corps, while fitting directly into the team’s win-now mandate, extended into Auston Matthews’ 11th season. If all goes awry, and John Chayka decides to further revamp the roster, McKenna will usher in the new era of Maple Leafs hockey as the face of the franchise.

Welcome to the McKennaissance Era. It constitutes a rebirth for the Maple Leafs, as McKenna is a truly special player and person, well-suited to command a hockey market that watches every shift under a microscope.
