The Carolina Hurricanes suffered a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins yesterday afternoon. Frederik Andersen got the start stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced. Andersen this season is 4-3-0 with a 2.96 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage. The Hurricanes also have Brandon Bussi who in four starts this season has looked good. He is 3-1-0 with a 2.25 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. Earlier this week Carolina also sent Pyotr Kochetkov on a conditioning stint with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. Kochetkov got the start last night and looked like he was in midseason form as he stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in a Wolves 4-1 win. So now with likely all three goalies ready to go where does Carolina go?

Frederik Andersen

The veteran goalie seems like he’ll be staying put. The option could be that they trade him, they could likely find someone who needs a goalie, someone like Edmonton who has had goalie questions come playoff time. Andersen though most likely will be the starting goalie.

Pyotr Kochetkov

Kochetkov played in a majority of the games for the Hurricanes last season. He played in 47 going 27-16-3 with a 2.60 goals-against average, a .897 save percentage, and two shutouts. The 26-year-old is viewed as the Hurricanes’ top goalie for the season so he’s going to for sure be back on the team.

Brandon Bussi

If the Hurricanes were to want to send him to Chicago to make room for Kochetkov’s return, they would need to place him on waivers. Do the Hurricanes want to risk placing a goalie on waivers who has been solid for them between the pipes? The other option is to just keep him and have one goalie not dress. That decision is a risk as you could have one of the three goalies sitting out for a week and getting rusty. I think the route they go is waivers and they hope he clears and they can keep him playing in Chicago. The bigger question with Bussi is whether he gets through waivers.

Next Up:

The Hurricanes return to the ice on Tuesday against the Rangers as they wrap up their brief road trip. Kochetkov was expected to return on the road trip so we’ll see if there’s an answer to the situation coming up and he returns to Carolina’s lineup.
