The New York Rangers made their big trade before the Olympic break, shipping Artemi Panarin off to Los Angeles in exchange for top prospect Liam Greentree and draft capital. The next biggest name to be moved by New York will be Vincent Trocheck.
With Trocheck being the hottest name on the market, GM Chris Drury will do his best to get a huge return for his top center. He had no leverage when he traded Panarin, and he has to nail a potential Trocheck trade if he wants to turn the team around quickly.
Trocheck is a fantastic player, and many teams will be racing to land him ahead of next week’s Trade Deadline. Centers always go for a high price, and Trocheck is expected to set the market. Ideally, the Rangers would like to acquire a first-round pick, a high-end prospect, and another young player. For how much Trocheck contributes on ice, I’d say that’s a fair asking price.
Right now, the Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings seem to be the leading suitors in the Trocheck sweepstakes. The general manager of the Wild, Bill Guerin, has been a long-time fan of Trocheck’s and could look to go all in after acquiring Quinn Hughes earlier in the season from the Canucks. With the Red Wings looking to make a playoff push, Trocheck would be a fantastic addition.
Unlike the Panarin situation, the New York Rangers actually have time to wait things out and let opposing teams bid against themselves. With the Minnesota Wild being the clear frontrunners, who should the Rangers look to acquire? Two of the top names from the Wild that will be thrown into trade conversations will be top prospect Charlie Stramel and Danila Yurov.
Stramel was the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and is currently playing for Michigan State. Unfortunately, he profiles to be a third-line center at best, so the Rangers would likely aim to get someone better. If New York acquired Stramel as the second piece of a deal, it would make more sense, but he’s not good enough to headline a deal.
While Yurov is slightly unrealistic, his name cannot be ruled out. He has experience and success at the NHL level at a young age and already has 22 points this season. With the Rangers seeking young talent who can contribute at a high level quickly, Yurov is exactly what they’re looking for. The question remains: will the Wild be that desperate to trade him for Trocheck?
Outside of Trocheck, the Rangers have other players they will look to move at the deadline. Braden Schneider, Sam Carrick, and Brennan Othmann. All three of these players have the potential to bring back draft capital if they were to be traded, which is exactly what New York needs. If they can bring in Greentree, another high-end prospect, and a lot of draft picks, Drury did an incredible job.
