When the Buffalo Sabres traded Sam Reinhart to the Florida Panthers back in 2021, goaltender Devon Levi was the prized prospect they received in return. Fast forward four years, and Levi has yet to stake his claim in Buffalo’s crease.
Levi has spent the past two seasons alternating time between the Sabres and the Rochester Americans of the AHL. Levi has impressed with Rochester, sporting a combined record of 41-19 with a save percentage of .923 over the past two years. His stints with Buffalo have been more of a struggle, however, as he only put up a combined record of 12-15 with a save percentage of .886 over his past two seasons of NHL action. Levi has yet to play for Buffalo this season.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff Live, The Sheet’s Jeff Marek joined hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton to discuss the Sabres’ plan for Levi, and what his future may look like.
Hutton: What’s the plan with Devon Levi? I need to know. I’m a Sabres goalie guy, he’s a stud. What’s the plan?
Marek: I wish I had the answer for you. I would have to think that Levi is pretty frustrated right now, looking at who the Sabres are doing their ride-or-die with right now with the netminding. We’ll see about Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. I think it’s interesting that if he has to go to any type of conditioning assigment in the American Hockey League, with Levi and (Alexandar) Georgiev there, you’re going to have three goaltenders in the American League on one-way. I think it’s a crowded crease already.
I wish I knew what the plan was. I was under the impression that the plan this season, and this goes back to July, was going to be Luukkonen and Levi, and it’s not a 50-50 split, but Levi starts to make that climb to becoming the No. 1 starter. But then Alex Lyon is in front of him, and then here comes Colten Ellis on waivers, and he gets placed in front of him. I know we’re talking a lot about what’s the future of players like Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch, but I’m really glad you brought this up, because I think this is potentially another major situation for the Buffalo Sabres as well.
