Whatever Happened to ex-Canadiens Alex Galchenyuk?

The Montreal Canadiens once had a pretty exciting young player. Alex Galchenyuk went third overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, and pretty quickly it became clear why. He had the hands, the skating and the offensive instincts. Then came a 30-goal season in Montreal, and suddenly the idea of Galchenyuk becoming a long-term star didn't seem all that far-fetched.

Well, things didn't exactly work out that way.

The NHL Dream Slowly Disappeared.

After six seasons in Montreal, the trades started coming. Montreal moved him to Arizona, then Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Ottawa, Toronto, and eventually other stops as Galchenyuk’s NHL career became harder to pin down. The talent was never really the question. Consistency was. There were stretches when Galchenyuk looked like the player everyone expected him to become, followed by stretches when he simply disappeared from games. His defensive side never really matched his offensive ability, either.

Then came the messy ending in Arizona in 2023. Galchenyuk was arrested, and the Coyotes terminated his contract shortly afterward. That effectively closed the NHL chapter of his career. For a player who once looked like a future star, it was quite a turn.

So Where Is Alex Galchenyuk Now?

Here's the part that might surprise people who haven't followed him. Galchenyuk is still playing hockey. He's been in the KHL since leaving North America for the 2023-24 season. He spent a season with SKA St. Petersburg and then two seasons with Amur Khabarovsk. The numbers haven't been spectacular, but they've been respectable. He’s generally put up around 30 points a season and has taken on some leadership along the way.

In March 2025, Galchenyuk signed a two-year contract with Spartak Moscow. That's a pretty significant hockey club, and early in the 2026-27 season Galchenyuk has chipped in a couple of assists in his first games.

At 32, he's obviously not the can't-miss kid anymore. But he's still a professional hockey player, still contributing, and still getting paid to do something he’s been doing for most of his life. There's something to that.

Interesting Where Galchenyuk Landed.

Maybe that's the most interesting thing about where Galchenyuk ended up. There was no great comeback, no late-career NHL resurrection and no Hollywood ending. He simply found another place to play. And that's something.

For the fans who remember that kid walking into Montreal as the third pick in the draft, there's inevitably a little bit of disappointment attached to the story. Galchenyuk never became the player many thought he would. But he's 32 years old, still lacing them up and still finding a way to contribute in professional hockey.

Sometimes the hockey life doesn't follow the script. You just find a team that wants you, and you keep playing.
