Ovechkin, who last season broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, now has 900 goals and 731 assists for 1,631 points, which ranks 11th on the NHL’s all-time points list. Ovechkin has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy nine times, most recently in 2019-20. He’s also won the Hart Trophy three times, as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy when the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018.

With Ovechkin’s contract expiring at the end of the 2025-26 season, some are wondering if the 2004 No. 1 overall pick will re-sign with the Capitals, or if he will move back to his native Russia and finish out his professional career in the KHL.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss Ovechkin’s 900th goal and what’s next for the Capitals’ captain.
Tyler Yaremchuk: What do you make of 900 for The Great 8?
Carter Hutton: It’s pretty crazy to sit here and think about where Ovechkin is at. Just going through some of the numbers in his career: More than 1,500 games played, 900 goals, he’s had 14 40-goal seasons, which is unbelievable, and nine 50-goal seasons.
Now it’s going to be interesting to see where it goes from here. What do the Capitals do now that Ovechkin starts to slow down.
