We’re less than a month away from NHL training camps getting started, and despite scoring 23 goals for the Minnesota Wild last season, Vladimir Tarasenko has yet to be signed.
The 34-year-old winger provided the Wild with a healthy amount of depth scoring in 2025-26, tied for third on goals and eighth in points (47). Through 14 NHL seasons, Tarasenko has reached the 30-goal mark six times, and proved last season that he’s still got plenty of game left.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss Tarasenko’s NHL career and what he could bring to a club that needs offense in 2026-27.
Tyler Yaremchuk: He’s a guy you played with in your career … do you think he’s being picky? If you look right now, half the league has north of $4 million in cap space. Why wouldn’t you want a guy who scored 16 even-strength goals last year?
It’s not like he’s a power-play merchant or that he played with Kirill Kaprizov all year and was chiseling points because he played with a ton of skilled teammates. This guy was still a bit of a driver last season.
Carter Hutton: He was, and that’s a factor. This guy can score goals in a league where it’s very hard to score goals. He’s played more than 900 games, scored more than 300 goals, and at his age of 34, the biggest question mark was his conditioning.
He is a guy in a world where conditioning and being in shape is so important, and at times, it can get away from him. But what he’s proven over the last few years is that he’s taken a lot more pride, he trains down in Florida, he’s gotten himself in unbelievable shape later in his career.
If you’re a team and can get him on a decent number on a one-year deal, I think this is a super low-risk signing. I know at times, Russian players can be a bit of a “buyer beware,” but on a one-year deal?
