The San Jose Sharks lost a heartbreaker Thursday night, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Vegas Golden Knights after blowing a 3-2 lead with less than two minutes to go.
The third and fourth goals from Vegas were even more devastating after Sharks’ goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made critical errors on each play, allowing a dumped puck to get by him on the tying goal, then overplaying his hand in overtime.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Sharks’ loss, the multiple gaffes committed by Nedeljkovic and debate which one was actually worse.
Tyler Yaremchuk: We’ll start with the game-tying goal: the Sharks miss on an open net, not once, but again on the wraparound. The play goes the other way, and credit to Jack Eichel for carrying this up the ice. It’s a chip in from outside the blueline that somehow fools Alex Nedeljkovic.
The game goes to overtime, and it’s fair to say Ned was rattled because he goes way out of his net to negate a 2-on-0, but turns it right over and it goes in the back of the net.
Which one of these plays is tougher to watch as a former goalie?
Carter Hutton: They’re both really bad. I’m really glad I’m retired so I don’t make these gaffes, because we’ve all been there. I think the tying goal is the worse one. You’re up 3-2 at home, it’s late in the game, and it’s a simple dump on net. That just can’t happen. The overtime one doesn’t happen if you just carrell that puck.
I feel for him, because he’s been through a lot and grinded through the minors. He’ll be OK.
