The Philadelphia Flyers officially announced their opening night roster ahead of Friday’s season-opener against the Vancouver Canucks, headlined by rookie sensation Matvei Michkov.
Michkov is just one of a few young future stars on this year’s roster, though.
Defensemen Egor Zamula and Cam York return for their second full seasons with the Flyers, while wingers Bobby Brink and Tyson Foerster booked their sophomore seasons in the big leagues.
Forwards (14)
Bobby Brink, Noah Cates, Sean Couturier, Nick Deslauriers, Joel Farabee, Tyson Foerster, Morgan Frost, Garnet Hathaway, Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton, Jett Luchanko, Matvei Michkov, Ryan Poehling, Owen Tippett
Defense (8)
Jamie Drysdale, Erik Johnson, Rasmus Ristolainen, Travis Sanheim, Nick Seeler, Cam York, Egor Zamula
Goalies (2) Sam Ersson, Ivan Fedotov
Jett Luchanko, the Flyers’ 2024 first-round pick, has already punched his ticket to the NHL despite having turned 18 years old only six weeks ago.
In his post-training camp press conference, Flyers GM Danny Briere said that he, the coaches, and the rest of the front office have not made a definitive decision on Luchanko’s immediate future in Philadelphia just yet.
“There’s nothing guaranteed. He might be here for one day or he could be here the whole season,” Briere said of Luchanko. “There’s nothing guaranteed, and we’re taking it day by day. But he’s been really impressive. And so far, he’s, he’s earned the rights to stay with and start with us.”
As such, as long as Luchanko plays in Game 1 against Vancouver on Friday, he will officially become the youngest player in Flyers history at 18 years and 51 days old.
The Guelph Storm ace has been practicing on the third line, centering Brink and Joel Farabee. Additionally, Luchanko has taken reps on the second power play unit alongside Brink, Farabee, Foerster, and Zamula.
There weren’t many surprises on this year’s opening night roster, but the Flyers found room for one in Jett Luchanko. How far he takes this early opportunity is ultimately up to him.
