NHL analyst Jeremy Tingly urged the Toronto Maple Leafs to sign forward Robby Fabbri to a professional tryout (PTO) to compete for a roster spot. A move that would make complete sense considering the team's current situation in that position.
Fabbri, 29, would bring experience to the Leafs, as we are talking about a Stanley Cup 2019 champion with the St. Louis Blues. Furthermore, he achieved that feat under the direction of Toronto's current coach, Craig Berube, so his adaptation would be straightforward, as he has the trust of the technical staff.
The recent signings (Nic Roy, Dakota Joshua, and Michael Pezzetta) profile more for the bottom-six. In that context, a PTO for Fabbri would make sense because he could compete for a full-time role.
The Canadian forward is also versatile, being able to play both as a center and as a winger, so he would add depth to the Maple Leafs' squad. Last season, he played 44 games with the Ducks and scored eight goals and gave eight assists.
Berube's philosophy is that his players must earn their place, and for now, Toronto is looking to strengthen its top-six to generate greater competition in training camp. Fabbri, therefore, would arrive directly to meet this demand.
Although the forward has suffered several knee injuries, when he stays fit, he is considered a real offensive threat, with a high of 37 points in a season. His signing would be a low-risk, high-potential bet. Why? Because if Fabbri is not in condition, the team can let him go at no cost.
