Why the Flames Should Draft Keaton Verhoeff

If Keaton Verhoeff is still sitting there when the Calgary Flames step to the podium, this feels like one of those picks that makes too much sense to overthink. Flames fans probably spent months dreaming about landing Gavin McKenna, and that’s fair enough. Every team would love a talent like that. But if Calgary walks away from this draft with Verhoeff, there’s a real argument they may still end up with exactly the kind of player their organization actually needs most.

Because big, right-shot defencemen with real upside don’t exactly grow on trees.

Verhoeff could be a 200-foot defenseman.

And Verhoeff isn’t just some safe, stay-at-home prospect either. There’s a lot more going on in his game than that. He skates well, competes hard, moves the puck confidently, and already looks like the kind of player coaches trust in difficult minutes. The offence is still developing, but the tools are there. More importantly, he plays the type of game NHL teams win in the playoffs.

That’s a huge part of why this fit works for Calgary. The Flames already have an exciting offensive blueliner in Zayne Parekh. Everybody knows the skill is there with Parekh. The points, the creativity, the power-play upside all jump off the screen. But teams still need balance on the back end, and Verhoeff feels like the kind of player who could eventually stabilize an entire pairing beside an offensive partner like that.

And honestly, that’s probably the dream scenario here.

Verhoeff and Parekh could become a valuable set of young defenseman.

You let Parekh attack, create, and play aggressively, while Verhoeff handles the tougher defensive details and heavy lifting. Suddenly, Calgary’s future blue line starts looking a whole lot more complete. The other reason this makes sense is timing.

The Flames are not under pressure to rush this player. That matters a lot for defencemen. Verhoeff still needs development time, and Calgary is actually in a position where patience could work in everybody’s favour. He can grow properly, add strength, round out the offensive side of his game, and arrive when he’s ready instead of being thrown into chaos too early.

That’s usually how organizations build a good defence corps, rather than scrambling to build one later.

A player like Verhoeff could become valuable when the Flames make the playoffs again.

And the truth is, players like Verhoeff often become even more valuable once playoff hockey starts. He projects to be able to play big minutes with tough matchups. He can add to the penalty kill and be solid in late-game situations. That’s where his type of game begins to matter more and more.

So, Flames fans may not get the flashy fantasy of McKenna. But if Calgary lands Keaton Verhoeff, they could still be walking away with one of the most important long-term pieces in this entire draft class.
