The New York Islanders announced on Friday that they have extended 34-year-old winger Kyle Palmieri to a two-year contract with a $4.75 million cap hit. It was the first move of Mathieu Darche’s term as Islanders general manager, although according to reports, it wasn’t exactly “his move”, as the contract was put together while Lou Lamoriello was still with the organization.
But does this signing have any indication as to what direction Darche intends to go with the team? The Islanders have found themselves in the murky middle for the past few years, trying to be a playoff contender but then not really having a lot else to the team beyond that. Is bringing back Palmieri a sign that Darche still wants to keep aiming for the playoffs?
Frank Seravalli talked about the Palmieri signing, and if it indicates anything about the future direction of the Islanders, on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: I think this was one that was done right before the trade deadline in March. They got to a comfortable place. He didn’t want to leave. He liked it. He wasn’t asking for an exorbitant sum. I think it falls right in line with market value. If each 10 points is a million bucks, 48 points last year, $4.75 million. He’s right in that neighborhood, and not asking for a ton for a guy that can routinely score you 28-30 goals.
He did it in a year that was down for everyone. Everyone’s numbers on the island really suffered. Their power play was so bad. So to still get to 24 goals, I thought that was pretty important.
I think it’s a win-win. He’s not breaking the bank. He can obviously be productive for two more years. Why not? I just don’t think it signals anything about what the future holds.
