Wild Sign Bill Guerin To Multi-Year Extension

One week after extending their head coach, the Minnesota Wild have also signed general manager Bill Guerin to a multi-year extension per ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. This move rewards Guerin on the heels of winning the NHL’s ‘Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year’ Award. He snatched the title from Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill, who won it in three-straight seasons between 2023 and 2025.

Guerin made his claim for the ‘GM of the Year’ Award with his December acquisition of star defenseman, and Vancouver Canucks captain, Quinn Hughes. Minnesota shipped out top defense prospect Zeev Buium, emerging top center Marco Rossi, winger Liam Ohgren, and a first-round draft pick to bring in Hughes. The move quickly paid off, with Hughes recording five goals and 53 points in 48 games through the end of Minnesota’s regular season. He added an additional four goals and 15 points in 11 postseason games, before the Wild were knocked out by the Colorado Avalanche.

Hughes managed to stand as the superstar of a lineup already equipped with Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. That progress was helped along by his familiarity with Minnesota’s previous top defender, Brock Faber, who briefly played with Hughes’ younger brother – New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes – with the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Guerin’s ability to assemble a lineup with reliable starpower in multiple spots has turned Minnesota into a powerhouse – on paper – though they haven’t yet turned that into premium results. The Wild made the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2015 last season but haven’t reached the Western Conference Finals since their third NHL season in 2003.

The 2026-27 Wild lineup seems like their best bet at breaking that cold streak. Minnesota found their way around the imposing Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs – winning in six games and outscoring Dallas by seven goals (23-to-15). Colorado represented the toughest round-two matchup in the Western Conference. That challenge was too large for an inexperienced Minnesota bottom-six, something Guerin addressed directly this summer. He brought in veteran forward Blake Coleman, former KHL scorer Maxim Shabanov, former Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno, and journeyman defenseman Olli Maatta to refresh Minnesota’s depth.

The offseason additions came at the expense of Vladimir Tarasenko, Jordan Greenway, and Jacob Middleton who each left the lineup. Still, Guerin’s focus on veteran additions provides more oomph to a depth chart that didn’t have a gut punch last season. Their presence, a full season of Hughes, and an easier postseason schedule could be enough to push Minnesota to new heights next season.

The Wild will have no doubts about Guerin’s ability to win big. In addition to a busy 2025-26 NHL season, he also served as the general manager for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Guerin’s roster rolled out multiple NHL stars, including both Quinn and Jack Hughes, and marched to a Gold Medal win over Team Canada. While USA’s roster featured plenty of obvious selections, Guerin’s decision to add Tage Thompson and Brock Nelson provided the edge needed to keep opponents on their heels. Thompson was a notable difference-maker after being left off of the roster at the 4-Nations Face-Off, where the USA fell to Canada in the championship.

A mutli-year extension will provide Guerin the chance to ride the ship he has built. The Wild roster looks largely different from the 2019 club he inherited, after five seasons and two Stanley Cup-wins as the Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager. The 2026-27 season won’t only be about pushing the Wild to new heights, though, as Hughes is also set to reach free agency next summer. His contract extension will loom over the Wild, emphasized by Cale Makar’s recent record-breaking extension with the Avalanche. How Guerin can manage those negotitations, while testing out a roster geared towards winning it all, will define his next stretch in Minnesota.
