William Nylander and Brendan Shanahan are among the headliners for Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s FACEOFF: Inside the NHL.

The documentary series provided an unparalleled behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the NHL and Nylander is a returnee for Season 2. Nylander provided full access during the 2023-24 campaign and one of his clips on the bench against the Boston Bruins went viral. During a critical Game 4 loss to the Bruins, Nylander was documented on the bench telling Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews ‘stop f—ing crying bro! This is the f—ing issue!’ and the Toronto Maple Leafs were eventually eliminated in seven games.

It will be particularly telling to get Nylander’s insights on the 2024-25 season. Nylander and the Maple Leafs advanced to the second round, where they were eliminated in seven games by the Florida Panthers, a series that included consecutive meltdowns on home ice in Game 5 and 7. He was Toronto’s most effective skater during the postseason, recording six goals and 15 points in 13 postseason games, separating himself from the rest of the team’s core.

Shanahan’s inclusion is perhaps more curious, after spending the past 11 years with the Maple Leafs. Following the Game 7 loss, Shanahan’s contract was not renewed by MLSE and the Maple Leafs aren’t likely to fill his position entering the 2024-25 season. Shanahan was tasked with overseeing the Core Four era of Maple Leafs hockey but it ultimately led to stalled progress, highlighted by the president’s undying loyalty to Nylander, Matthews, Marner and John Tavares.

The rest of the cast includes Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Anze Kopitar, Matthew Tkachuk, Mikko Rantanen, Thomas Harley, Quinton Byfield, Wyatt Johnston, Seth Jarvis, Sean Monahan, Brady Tkachuk and Zach Werenski. At the time of this filing, it’s unclear whether Nylander will have a standalone episode, but given the way the Maple Leafs’ season ended, it’s no wonder why it makes for prime time viewing.
