Jets coach Scott Arniel was mind-blown as to how Mark Scheifele got an additional penalty in a play that saw Jamie Benn ejected, and he blasted the referees.
The Winnipeg Jets had their playoff contention preserved by means of a dominant 4-0 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 5, but the final minutes of the game ushered forth more furor than elation.
With minutes to go and the Jets up 3-0, a heated scrum occurred following a whistle. Stars captain Jamie Benn knocked Jets forward Mark Scheifele to the ice with a heavy punch, and chaos followed.
Scheifele was visibly caught off guard and was fuming as he rose to his feet. Benn received a roughing penalty, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game ejection.
Brandon Tanev, a forward for the Jets, was also ejected, and Scheifele was assessed a roughing minor, giving Dallas a power play. Winnipeg killed the power play and preserved the shutout.
Jets coach Scott Arniel was mind-blown as to how the Stars ended up getting a power play on that play when it was one of their players who ended up being ejected. He put the officials on blast in a very fiery post-game rant.
'I wasn't really happy with how that,' said Jets head coach Scott Arniel after the game. 'I mean, we're the ones who are up in the game, I didn't think we should have come out of that pileup having the extra minor.'
The emotions still ran high after the final buzzer, as Jason Robertson and Haydn Fleury exchanged cross-checking penalties and a postgame fight erupted at center ice.
The series, 3-2 in Dallas' favor, moves to Texas for Game 6 on Saturday. The Jets face a daunting challenge: halting a nine-game playoff road losing streak to force the series to a Game 7.
Much will depend on Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg's top goalie and Vezina stalwart. While unbelievable at home (.915 save percentage, two shutouts), his playoff road numbers have been unsteady (.793 save percentage, four games with five-plus goals allowed).
Winnipeg's season now hangs in the balance.
