Now that the Jets' season has come to an end, team owner Mark Chipman took the time to pen and release an important letter to all of the organization's fans.
The Winnipeg Jets players held end-of-season sit-downs this week with head coach Scott Arniel and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, who commended the players for their efforts in a record-breaking regular season.
'The first thing we did was that we complimented them,' Arniel said Wednesday as he and Cheveldayoff held their final media availability.'We told them how proud we were of the year we had, the things we accomplished as a group. Just the fact that we won the Presidents' Trophy, that we were consistent for 82 games, all those things that we did.'
The Jets broke the franchise mark with 56 wins and dominated the league with 116 points, but were kicked out of the playoffs by losing in the second round, Game 6, to the Dallas Stars, 2-1 in overtime.
Although they had progressed further than the previous two seasons, the early exit was disappointing for a Stanley Cup caliber team. Arniel will sit down with players over the next two weeks to get an idea of where they stand.
Captain Adam Lowry was hopeful, thinking the group would work that much harder next season.
'There's a lot of optimism that with another good summer, guys really pushing to get better to work on their game and to find ways to improve, that we can come back next year and put ourselves in a spot to be successful again,' Lowry said.'Put ourselves in a spot to go on another playoff run and hopefully this one ends in late June instead of late May.'
Cheveldayoff also concurred that the club is on the verge of improving.
'We're fortunate we have a real strong core of guys that are going to push, pull and prod,' Cheveldayoff said. 'A lot of different guys that are on the good side of (age) 30, I guess, in the sense that there's still capacity for them to grow.'That's the group of guys that we're going to challenge to help take us to that next level. And again, it can't be underestimated, we have the best goaltender in the world.'
Jets owner Mark Chipman wrote an open letter to the fans expressing his appreciation for their support throughout the season.
He reaffirmed his commitment to building a championship hockey team and also reaffirmed that the organization is dedicated with every fiber of its being to winning the Stanley Cup in Winnipeg as soon as possible.
The Jets are entering an offseason with a series of significant moves to make. Eight players, such as winger Nikolaj Ehlers, will be unrestricted free agents.
Lowry and Kyle Connor are going into the final year of their contracts and have the chance to be signed long-term.
The organization also has six restricted free agents on the active roster, such as defenceman Dylan Samberg and forwards Gabe Vilardi and Morgan Barron.
