Winnipeg Jets Statistics To Now Encompass All Eras

The NHL has made a change to how statistics are tracked for the Winnipeg Jets. Previously, all Jets records only tracked the modern iteration of the team – which formed in the 2011-12 season after the Atlanta Thrashers folded. This decision left Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler on top of many of the club’s all-time records, while former Jets greats like Dale Hawerchuk and Peter Šťastný were lumped in with the Phoenix Coyotes statistics, as a result of the Jets’ move to Arizona in 1996.

The NHL has now reconsidered those groupings. Moving forward, the Jets’ all-time statistics will include three eras of the team: their initial formation from 1979 to 1996, their years as the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999 to 2011, and their modern existence.

This change will reshape Winnipeg’s all-time statistical leaders. Hawerchuk now owns the record for most goals (379) and points (929) in team history, achieved during his nine-year career with Winnipeg form 1981 to 1990. Hawerchuk went on to play seven more seasons in the NHL and was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Thomas Steen now holds the record for most assists in Jets history (553) and Laurie Boschman takes over the record for most penalty minutes (1,338).

In addition to record book changes, this decision will give Scheifele a new mission for the 2026-27 season. Winnipeg’s top center sits just seven goals, and 22 points, behind Hawerchuk’s all-time marks. Scheifele has had much more time to reach those heights – appearing in 961 games with Winnipeg to Hawerchuk’s 713 games. Nonetheless, Scheifele should have no trouble regaining his spot on top of Winnipeg’s leaderboards. He could even catch Steen’s assist record with a typical year, currently boasting 535 career helpers.

Speaking to his potential to achieve those feats, after passing Wheeler in many categories last year, Scheifele told NHL.com’s Jamie Thomas:

I’m chasing a different guy. A guy that meant a lot to me and this community. That one will be even more special.
