World Championship: Karlsson's tying goal helps Sweden win bronze
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Erik Karlsson, Marcus Petterson and Sweden won bronze in the World Championship on Sunday after defeating Michael Bunting and Canada 3-2 in Czechia.

Sweden opened the scoring 12:05 into the first period off a goal from the Kings' Carl Grundstrom. The Sabres' Dylan Cozens tied the game for Canada in the second period, then Canada took the lead early in the third period courtesy of a goal from the Kings' Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Canada took a penalty minutes later and killed it off, but Karlsson scored the tying goal for Sweden seconds after the power play expired:

Grundstrom scored his second goal of the game with 6:18 left in regulation and the Wild's Marcus Johansson scored into the empty net with five seconds remaining as Sweden clinched bronze.

This is Karlsson's second World Championship medal of his career after he previously won bronze with Sweden in 2010. This was only the third time he even participated in the tournament, and first since 2012. This year's tournament was the third of Pettersson's career, and the first time that he's won a medal.

Karlsson finished the tournament with six goals and five assists in 10 games, the second-most points of any defenseman after Switzerland's Roman Josi. Pettersson scored three goals and two assists in 10 games. Bunting, who was playing in his second World Championship after previously winning gold in 2021, had one goal and three assists in 10 games.

MORE FROM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

• Switzerland and the host nation Czechia play for gold later this afternoon. I'll update the story when that game's over. There aren't any Penguins ties in that one other than former defenseman Jan Rutta and former Wilkes-Barre defenseman Libor Hajek on Czechia, and Rutta is suspended for an elbow to the head of a Swedish player last game.

• That's a wrap on this year's tournament. Next year Sweden and Denmark will be joint hosts for the tournament.
