Yaroslav Askarov and Spencer Stastney Compete in AHL All Star Challenge Tonight
USA TODAY Sports

While the NHL All Star Weekend has wrapped up, the AHL has kicked off its 2024 All Star Classic. Last night the league's All Stars competed in the skills challenge and tonight the players will play in the All Star Challenge 3-on-3 tournament.

Milwaukee Admirals goaltender Yaroslav Askarov and defenseman Spencer Stastney were selected as 2024 AHL All Stars and have been participating in the two day event in San Jose, CA.

Last night Askarov competed against other top goaltenders in the AHL in the skills challenge that included rapid fire, pass and score, and the breakaway relay. Always one who understands the assignment, Askarov made sure to keep it entertaining during the rapid fire contest.

While Jesper Wallstedt from the Iowa Wild and Jet Greaves of the Cleveland Monsters shared the CCM Top Goaltender honers, Askarov may have stolen the show with his aggressive and entertaining play.

Defenseman Spencer Stastney showed off his much talked about skating and speed in the fastest skater contest. Stastney came in second to record holder Ethen Frank of the Hershey Bears. Frank finished his lap with a time of 13.032 while Statsney finished in 13.415. Stastney recorded a 97.2 mph shot in the hardest shot contest as well.

Tonight Stastney and Askarov will join their Central Division All Star teammates in the All Star Challenge. The four AHL divisions — Central, North, Atlantic, and Pacific — will compete in a three-on-three round robin style tournament. Each game will be ten minutes, and the two best teams after six games will advance to the championship game.

Askarov and Stastney will be joined by former Admiral and Nashville Predator Rocco Grimaldi on Team Central as he represents the Chicago Wolves at the AHL All Star Weekend.

Tonight's All Star Challenge will air on NHL Network in America and TSN in Canada. AHLTV will also be offering a free video stream. The event will kick off at 8:00 pm CT.
