The defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers have had an up-and-down start to the season, but their fortunes might soon change thanks to the addition of a key player to their active roster.
Zach Hyman has missed the first 19 games of the 2025-26 season while recovering from a wrist injury suffered in Game 4 of last year’s Western Conference Final. He underwent surgery in the offseason and began the year on long-term injured reserve.
This week, head coach Kris Knoblauch said Hyman is likely to return sometime before the end of the team's current road trip.
“Yeah, unfortunately, not ready for tonight,” Knoblauch said on Wednesday before a game in Philadelphia. “We’re definitely looking sometime this week, maybe tomorrow if we’re really lucky, but definitely by Saturday.”
EDM lineup notes vs. CBJ:
— Tony Brar (@TonyBrarOTV) November 13, 2025
• Tomasek comes in for Howard
• Regula in for Emberson on the back end
• Calvin Pickard starts
Additionally, Zach Hyman will make his return on Saturday vs. CAR. #Oilers
Team reporter Tony Brar confirmed that timeline on Thursday, reporting on X that Hyman will make his season debut against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Hyman did not play Thursday during the Oilers' 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Oilers have been missing Hyman's presence during the first quarter of the season. Outside of Leon Draisaitl (12), the only Edmonton forward who has more than five goals is Connor McDavid (seven).
While several players have rotated onto McDavid’s wing during Hyman’s absence, no combination has brought the consistency Edmonton enjoyed with him in the lineup.
Hyman will immediately enter the top-six forward group once he's available. He's coming off a 27-goal season following a career-best 54-goal campaign in 2023-24.
Edmonton (8-7-4) visits the Hurricanes (11-5-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
