In a strange whirlwind of events, speculation, and Zach Werenski staying radio silent until yesterday, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ most important player and one of the top three NHL defensemen finally publicly addressed his future with the organization. Werenski is all in; he fully committed to Columbus in joint statements with GM Don Waddell.

NHL heavyweights had been reporting for a short time that Werenski would not renew his contract when it is up in two years. Elliotte Friedman, Chris Johnson, Kevin Weeks, Frank Seravalli and others were adamant Werenski wanted out. So what happened, and where does the truth lie?

After falling just short of a playoff birth for a second consecutive season and a head coach who gave one of the NHL’s all-time end-of-season rants, it is fair to say that after winning a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games, Werenski wants to win.

Having four months to digest what Rick Bowness said during his rant, it is possible Werenski was just as frustrated as his coach. It is also fair to say that, based on heightened emotions and wanting to win, Werenski’s agent asked Waddell to explore trade options.

There was reportedly a deal in place to send Werenski to the Dallas Stars; having invoked his no-trade clause, Werenski nixed the would-be deal. That is when Waddell, Werenski, and his agent sat down and had a lengthy, productive conversation about the player’s intent and wishes.

Zach Werenski is noted for wanting to finish things and not bail when it is difficult. That also factors into his wanting to stay. Having cleared the air with management and being satisfied with the direction of both the roster and organization, he wants to stay and win in Columbus.

This is welcome news for both the Blue Jackets front office and the team’s fan base.
