The Winter Olympics are usually all about split-second landings, soaring distances and national pride wrapped in snow and ice. For Finland, the Games have carried a mix of optimism and steady momentum this year.

The team has quietly put together a respectable showing. It hasn’t been a headline-dominating run but it’s been disciplined, very Finland. That’s why what happened behind the scenes caught many off guard.

Midway through the Games, Finland’s ski jumping program suddenly found itself in the spotlight for reasons that had nothing to do with performance on the hill.

Head coach Igor Medved was sent home following what officials described as an alcohol-related violation of team conduct rules, per NBC. Details were limited, but the Finnish Olympic Committee made it clear the situation was handled swiftly.

Medved later issued a brief and direct apology, acknowledging his mistake and expressing regret of his actions.

“I made a mistake and I am very sorry,” Medved said in a statement. “I want to apologize to the entire Finnish team, the athletes and also the fans.”

For a nation that prides itself on structure and accountability, the quick decision underscored a simple message: no individual is bigger than the team. As Finland continues its Olympic campaign, the focus now shifts back to competition and to making sure the story on the slopes outweighs the one off them.

So far, Finland has secured a bronze medal at these Games, with Eero Hirvonen's 30:01.9 performance in the combined normal hill and 10 km cross-country skiing event.
