JD Vance Responds To Eileen Gu Representing China

Perhaps no athlete in the Winter Olympics has sparked as much conversation in the United States as Team China freestyle skier Eileen Gu over the past couple of weeks. Her decision to represent China rather than her native U.S. has been seen as a betrayal by countless Americans.

But what does U.S. Vice President JD Vance think about the controversy over Gu's competitive decisions?

The short answer is, he's not fond of the idea.

Appearing on Fox News, Vance lamented that Gu would choose not to represent the United States despite her benefitting from the U.S. education system along with "the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place." He said that he won't be rooting for her and will instead root for American athletes who identity themselves as American.

"I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope that they want to compete with the United States of America," Vance said. "So, I'm going to root for American athletes and I think part of that is people who identify themselves as Americans. That's who I'm rooting for this Olympics."

Team USA vs. Team China: The Battle for Gu

Eileen Gu was born in the United States and competed in freestyle skiing for the U.S. at the 2018-19 World Cup. But later that year, she changed her nation choice to China, claiming at the time that she hoped to serve as an inspiration to millions of young people in China.

Contrary to popular belief, Gu has not renounced her U.S. citizenship and she identifies herself as Asian-American. In 2021, she remarked to ESPN that she considers herself American in the U.S. and Chinese in China.

"Nobody can deny I'm American, nobody can deny I'm Chinese."

On the slopes, Gu has won two Freestle World Ski Championships in the halfpipe and slopestyle, three gold medals at the Winter X games and claimed two gold medals plus a silver at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In this Olympics, Gu has already claimed silver medals in both the big air and slopestyle events. She will be competing for the halfpipe later this week.
