The Milan Cortina 2026 figure skating pairs event delivered two milestone moments that rewrote Olympic history books, with Japan capturing its first-ever pairs gold medal and Georgia claiming the nation's first Winter Olympic medal in any sport.

Both teams drew overwhelming praise from the official Olympics social media team, which celebrated the breakthrough performances that electrified Day 10 at the Milan Ice Skating Arena.

Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara showcased one of the most dramatic comebacks in Olympic pairs history. After sitting in fifth place following a difficult short program, they rebounded on Monday to win Japan's first-ever Olympic gold medal in pairs.

The duo set a new world record under the current ISU Judging System for a pairs free skate, scoring 158.13. This score surpassed the previous record of 157.64 set in 2022. Their total score of 231.24 edged out their Georgian rivals by nearly 10 points.

Honoring their class performance, the Olympics penned, "WHAT A NIGHT ON ICE! Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi secured Japan's first Olympic gold medal in pair skating as Milano Cortina 2026 figure skating continues to dazzle the world."

For Georgia’s Anastasiia Metelkina, 20, and Luka Berulava, 23, their silver medal carried some extra significance. The European champions finished with 221.75 points, maintaining second place through both the short program (75.46) and free skate (146.29).

Just to recap, Georgia has a population of about 3.8 million people. While their athletes have earned 40 medals at the Summer Olympics, the country had never reached the podium at a Winter Games until now. This performance marks Georgia's first-ever Winter Olympic medal.

To celebrate their marquee achievement, the Olympics noted, "HISTORIC MEDAL. History was made as Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava earned Georgia their first-ever Olympic medal at a Winter Games with silver after a stunning performance in the pair skating."

Since teaming up in early 2023, the Georgian pair has moved quickly through the ranks. They won two World Junior titles and the 2026 European Championship before taking bronze at the 2024-25 Grand Prix Final.

The best part? They have won every national competition they've entered and are now the face of Georgian figure skating. After capturing the silver medal in Milan, the pair has made it crystal clear they are targeting gold at the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.

Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin won bronze in pairs figure skating, earning Germany’s first medal in the sport since 2018. They led the short program with a career-high 80.01 but finished third with a final score of 219.09.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will end this Sunday with the closing ceremony at the Verona Arena. And figure skating finishes its competitive rounds with the women’s free skate this Thursday, followed by the exhibition gala on Saturday.
