The quarterfinal stage of the men’s Olympic hockey tournament in Milan, Italy saw its fair share of drama. From a pair of comeback efforts, a tight affair between two powerhouses and a dominant one-sided victory for an underdog medal contender, Wednesday had a bit of everything.
Canada, Slovakia, Finland and the United States are the four teams moving on, with Canada serving as the top seed. Had a team outside the four that ultimately made the semifinal moved on, there would have been a re-seeding based on who was still left.
For example, had Sweden beat USA, the Slovaks would have become the new No. 2 seed, while Sweden would be the No. 4. But after the highest-seeded team won all four games, no re-seeding was required. Canada was given the earlier semifinal – typically viewed as the better option due to the extra rest – after finishing the round-robin as the top seed.
