Tokyo Olympics to allow 10,000 local spectators per event despite COVID-19 fears

A limited number of local spectators will be allowed to attend the Tokyo Olympics this summer. 

Organizers announced Monday that 10,000 fans, 50% capacity, will be permitted to each Olympic venue, according to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN). However, if coronavirus cases rise again, then the rules could be changed, and fans could still be barred altogether. Spectators from outside Japan were banned months ago. 

Fans will be forced to follow strict protocols at events. They must wear masks, and no cheering is allowed. Japan is also encouraging spectators to go straight home after an event they attend is over. 

3.64 million tickets have already been sold to Japanese residents, which is about 900,000 more than the seats likely to be available. 

The decision comes as many residents of Japan believe the Olympics should not be held due to the pandemic. Tokyo residents began protests against the Olympics last month, holding up signs reading "Extinguish the Olympic Torch" and "Cancel the Tokyo Olympics."

A recent poll conducted in Japan said 80% of Japanese citizens are against the Olympics beginning on July 23. 43% of those citizens want the Games canceled, while 40% want another postponement.
