Watch: Budding American soccer star Sophia Smith scores two goals vs. Germany

In recent years, names such as Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe have starred for the U.S. women's national team. Sophia Smith could be next in that line.

On Sunday, in the USWNT's Group B match against Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Smith netted a goal on an assist from Trinity Rodman in the 10th minute. Then, she scored another goal from a high shot outside of the box in the 44th minute, giving the Americans a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Smith left with a leg injury in the USWNT's Olympic debut against Zambia. It's a positive for the Americans that the ailment doesn't appear to be affecting her.

Smith — the 2022 U.S. Female Soccer Player of the Year — is one of the most accomplished players on an inexperienced team. The average age on the Olympic roster for the women's team is 26.8 years old, the youngest since the 2008 Beijing Games.

Clearly, Team USA needs the Portland Thorns FC forward to keep scoring goals to win its first gold medal since the 2012 London Olympics.
