We gave out Bobby Witt Jr. at +470 to win the Home Run Derby, so it was heartbreaking to watch his final swing plunk off the center-field wall as he came up just short in the final round. We can't be mad about the pick, but that one hurt.
MLB moves to the All-Star Game on Tuesday night, and we're eyeing up a juicy Same Game Parlay for the AL-NL clash.
Crafting a winning ASG SGP
Leg 1: 1st inning correct score — tie 0-0
Who doesn't love a no-run-first-inning sweat, especially with two shutdown pitchers on the mound?
Rookie phenom Paul Skenes has been dominant this season with his 1.90 ERA, 0.920 WHIP and 34.9 percent strikeout rate. The hard-throwing righty will likely pitch only one inning, so you know he's going to light up the radar gun as much as he can. No batter in the AL starting lineup has faced Skenes yet, giving the pitcher the advantage.
On the other side, Baltimore Orioles starter Corbin Burnes has given up just five first-inning runs in 19 starts this season. He'll have to dodge Shohei Ohtani in the two-hole, but we trust the veteran to escape with a clean inning.
Leg 2: Under 7.5
Death, taxes and the All-Star Game going under the total. Since 2008, 11 of the last 15 All-Star Games have gone under 7.5 total runs. These pitchers are simply too good in short spurts, and batters don't have the advantage of seeing the same pitcher multiple times.
With how much the managers have to mix players in and out of the lineup, it's nearly impossible for either team to get in a groove offensively. Pitchers throw harder and generate more spin now than ever before, so we'll continue to ride the under trend.
Leg 3: Trea Turner to record a hit
If we're going to back one player to have some success at the plate on Tuesday night, it has to be Turner. The Philadelphia Phillies star is absolutely on fire with a .417 batting average, a 1.368 OPS and eight home runs over his last 12 games played. He's also batting .400 against Burnes in his career, so he gets a solid matchup right from the jump.
Batting in the three-spot for the NL, Turner should get at least two at-bats in the All-Star Game. We just need one of them to end with a hit.
Put it all together, and we get a +488 Same Game Parlay on FanDuel. Let's cash!
In the news ...
Teoscar Hernandez edges out Bobby Witt Jr. to win Home Run Derby — The 2024 Home Run Derby came down to the final swing of the night, as Hernandez knocked off Witt, 14-13, in the championship round. The thrilling finish came shortly after Hernandez defeated Alec Bohm in a dramatic swing-off in the semifinals. The 31-year-old is the first Los Angeles Dodgers player to win the Home Run Derby crown. Hernandez was +1000 to win the All-Star event, while those with +470 Witt tickets (like ourselves) came up just short.
Team USA narrowly defeats Australia in Olympics tune-up — The United States men's basketball team clearly has some kinks to work out before the Paris Olympics next month. Team USA faced off against Australia in an exhibition Monday in Abu Dhabi, and it escaped with a 98-92 victory despite coughing up 18 turnovers. Anthony Davis led the Americans with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Kevin Durant remains on the sidelines with a calf injury. Team USA is still -500 to win the gold medal in Paris.
Bronny James continues to struggle in NBA Summer League — James is off to a rough start as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. The rookie put up just two points on 1-for-5 shooting, chucked up two airballs and committed two turnovers in L.A.'s loss to the Boston Celtics on Monday night. Through four games in the NBA Summer League, James is 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) from the field and 0-for-15 from three. He's displayed some intriguing athleticism and strong defense, but the offense has a long way to go. James is +25000 to win NBA Rookie of the Year.
