The PWHL announced Friday that Minnesota Frost forward Britta Curl has been suspended one game for an illegal check to the head against Toronto Sceptres’ defender Renata Frost during Game 1 of their first-round series last Wednesday.
The PWHL today announced that, after an automatic review by the PWHL Player Safety Committee, Minnesota Frost forward Britta Curl-Salemme has been assessed a one-game suspension for an illegal check to the head in Game 1 of the PWHL Playoffs against Toronto.

“The Player Safety Committee determined that Curl-Salemme, at 14:37 of the second period in Wednesday’s game, delivered a high and forceful check on opponent Renata Fast, making the head the main point of contact on a play where such contact to the head was avoidable,” the league wrote in a statement. “The play resulted in a major penalty and a game misconduct in violation of PWHL Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head.”
This is Curl’s third one-game suspension of the season. She was punished for a Jan. 2 high-sticking incident against the Boston Fleet, and another illegal check to the head against the Sceptres on March 9.
In Game 1, Julia Gosling scored two goals in 1:55 and Kristen Campbell made 19 saves as the Sceptres defeated the Frost 3-2 Wednesday night to take a 1-0 series lead.
Game 2 is Friday at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
In the other PWHL Walter Cup Playoff series, a couple of timely goals and some strong work on the defensive end, the Ottawa Charge came away with a 3-2 win over the top-seeded Montreal Victoire in Game 1 of their PWHL Semifinal series.

Maple Leafs get unfortunate news about acquiring Flames veteran
The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to explore ways to upgrade the roster following Mitch Marner's departure in free agency. The Leafs front office has been trying to fill in the gaps along the roster, and they have been searching on the trade front. One name that has been heavily connected to the Maple Leafs in recent weeks is Calgary Flames star Nazem Kadri. Kadri could replace Marner very well in the lineup, but it seems that a deal could be complicated to complete. According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of SportsNet, Toronto has tried to land Kadri multiple times this summer, only to be rebuffed each time. Kypreos believes that a deal involving Kadri returning to the Maple Leafs could be unlikely at this point in the summer. Last season, Kadri posted 35 goals and 32 assists for the Flames. His presence has been steady on the ice for years, and Calgary could probably get a lot on the trade market for him. The Maple Leafs will likely continue to explore ways to pry Kadri from the Flames. But Calgary likely won't trade him unless it receives an offer that it deems too good to be true. But Kadri is the leader of this team, and he was the best player for them last season. Toronto doesn't have a lot of tradable assets to work with, which could be what is holding things up between the two sides. The veteran could give Toronto a nice boost, but unless the Maple Leafs up the offer, he isn't returning to town.
Maple Leafs are reportedly looking to make a splash trade
With the Toronto Maple Leafs losing star Mitch Marner this offseason, the team has had to fill a massive hole in the lineup. The Toronto front office has done a decent job so far, and the roster looks a little more well-rounded. But it seems that the Maple Leafs may not be done making moves this summer. According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of SportsNet, Toronto could trade away defensemen Morgan Rielly or Brandon Carlo in an attempt to add more offense. "While we do also have Morgan Rielly on this list, if the Leafs move a defenseman it'll likely only be one of them. But while Rielly comes with the complication of a no-movement clause, Brandon Carlo has just an eight-team no-trade list and so is also worth putting on the trade board. "Making $3.485M against the cap for another two years, Carlo was a welcome addition to the Leafs' defense corps, averaging 19:13 of ice time per game and nearly two minutes on the PK. In the playoffs, he was among the team's shot-blocking leaders," Kypreos wrote. Marner accounted for 27 goals and 75 assists last season, which will be very tough for the Maple Leafs to replace. But the team does have a limited number of tradable assets to work with, which could potentially be why they are thinking of trading a defender. The Toronto front office remains very active on the trade front and it could lead to a deal taking place. There is still plenty of time left between now and the start of the regular season, giving the Maple Leafs some needed optionality before the new year.

Kelsey Plum takes shot at Caitlin Clark after WNBA All-Star Game
On Saturday night, Kelsey Plum was part of Team Collier's 151-131 win over Team Clark in the WNBA All-Star Game, scoring 16 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Following the game, the Los Angeles Sparks star was asked about WNBA All-Stars wearing shirts before the game that read, "Pay Us What You Owe Us." Specifically, Plum was asked about how that idea came together. "The T-shirt — just a united front," she said. "That was determined this morning, that we had a meeting for. Not to tattletale, but zero members of Team Clark were very present for that." Plum said it with a chuckle. However, she was sitting next to New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, who rolled her eyes and said, "Didn't really need to be mentioned" before laughing. It was awkward, especially because Caitlin Clark, as well as all of the members of Team Clark, wore the shirts. If Clark didn't wear the shirt, you could understand some backlash. But she did. It should also be noted that Team Collier featured the president of the WNBA Players Association, Nneka Ogwumike, as well as the first vice president, Plum, and two vice presidents, Napheesa Collier and Brenna Stewart. It makes sense if they took on greater leadership roles in a statement like this against the league. Whether Plum likes it or not, the reason the WNBA has any sort of leverage heading into these negotiations with the league is Clark. She would do well to remember that the next time she wants to take an unnecessary shot at Clark, who is responsible for the greatest surge in fan attention the WNBA has ever seen.

Caitlin Clark has already stamped herself as one of the WNBA’s faces since stepping onto the scene last season. For many fans, she’s not just rising, but rocketing toward superstardom. However, even the Indiana Fever star has her own childhood idol, and that name’s as big as it gets. Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of “A Touch More With Sue Bird,” Caitlin Clark shared how she was left “starstruck” after meeting LeBron James, her idol. She even likened the feeling to another legendary NBA icon. “The one person that like really like made me starstruck, probably was LeBron [James], because LeBron was the person that I grew up absolutely loving,” Clark told Bird and co-host Megan Rapinoe. “He was like my Michael Jordan because I was younger, and that’s the person that I always looked up to. James has praised the former Iowa sensation on several occasions, recognizing not just her talent, but the momentum she’s brought to the game. Moreover, both players are wired the same way: ultra-competitive, relentless, and never content with easy wins. James, despite being in his 40s, with nothing else to prove, is definitely not falling for “Father Time.” Meanwhile, Clark, in her second season, has sustained tons of injuries and has struggled often, but her effect is still alive and going. LeBron James believes Caitlin Clark is the catalyst of the WNBA Even before Caitlin Clark‘s arrival in the pro scene, LeBron James had already shown support for her. Speaking on the “Mind the Game” podcast, James offered the kind of endorsement only a true legend could give. “Caitlin Clark is the reason why a lot of great things are gonna happen for the WNBA,” James said. “But for her individually, I don’t think she should get involved in anything that’s being said, just go have fun, enjoy. I’m rooting for Caitlin because I’ve been in that seat before, I’ve walked that road before… I’m glad that Caitlin has a great head on her shoulders.” James also celebrated Caitlin Clark’s achievements in the WNBA, most recently her comeback from her left quad injury last June, as an example. The four-time NBA champion also dapped up with Clark one time, wishing the best for the WNBA sophomore as her rise in the league continues.
