Yankees show offensive potential in 10-run inning vs. Rockies

DENVER — After scoring just three runs over their previous two games, the New York Yankees were ready to bust out on Saturday at Coors Field.

New York sent 14 men to the plate in a dominating fifth inning, posting 10 runs in the frame on their way to a 13-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in front of a Yankee-partisan crowd of 43,186. The 14 plate appearances during the inning was New York's most in an inning since having 14 on June 30, 2019 at Boston.

The 10-run inning marked the 14th time this season the Yankees had scored five runs or more in an inning. The outburst also gave the Yankees their fourth game in May where they have scored 11 runs or more.

Tied 1-1 heading into the fifth, the Yankees used nine hits and three walks to blow the game wide open. Austin Wells and Trent Grisham each had two hits in the frame, with Wells' single opening the frame and setting the tone.

"Today was a really good example of a really good snowball inning," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. "A couple of bats at the bottom of the order kicked us off and then we just had some really excellent at-bats.

"Coming off four or five days where we haven't scored a bunch, to break out like that was nice."

It was also nice for the Yankees to even up the three-game series in Colorado after the Rockies held New York's offense in check during a 3-2 win on Friday night. 

After that loss, Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt said the team was "ticked off" and New York looked like a team ready to prove a point on Saturday. Leadoff hitter Paul Goldschmidt laced the first pitch from Rockies starter Kyle Freeland into left for a base hit and Aaron Judge followed later in the inning with a solo shot to right-center, his 18th home run of the season, to give New York the quick lead.
