Bengals QB Joe Flacco gets honest about potential of joining longtime rival

The Pittsburgh Steelers secured former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy as their new leader and now turn their sights to the next vacancy they need to fill, the quarterback position.

Signing McCarthy could help lure four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers back to them, but the Steelers could look to another Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Joe Flacco. At 41, Flacco is looking toward his 19th season in the NFL, and the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year hasn't been thinking about his future, saying, “I don't think that's hit me yet.”

"A lot of guys talk about falling out of love with the game or just kind of knowing," Flacco said this week on the "BMore Football Podcast," via the Baltimore Sun’s Bennett Conlin. "I don't think that's hit me yet. We talk about 40 being an old age, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't really think you're that old," Flacco said. "I think we've had a couple guys in front of me that are the best to ever do it that have shown if you want to do it, you can still play at a high level."

Joe Flacco said playing for Steelers would 'seem a little different'

Despite being a perfect match for the Steelers, Flacco donning the black and gold would look odd after playing for their divisional rival, the Baltimore Ravens, for 11 seasons.

"There's something about the Steelers that seems a little bit different because they were our rival for so many years," Flacco said. "But at the end of the day, I play football because I love it. It is a job of mine. If somebody is hiring me, that is a pretty big deal."

Joe Flacco would provide the Steelers with a solid veteran presence

Whatever Flacco decides to do with his future, he has put up solid career numbers over his 18 seasons with the Ravens, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and Cincinnati Bengals. Flacco has thrown for 48,176 yards and 272 touchdowns, while throwing 172 interceptions, and was named Super Bowl XLVII MVP.

Flacco would provide a nice veteran presence to a rebuilding team with a young quarterback. Possibly signing with the New Orleans Saints as their backup to help mentor quarterback Tyler Shough, who had a decent rookie season — 2,384 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games — may be a smart idea to continue his career.
