In recent years, the All-Star Game's lack of competitiveness has become a talking point among NBA fans.
Players like Anthony Edwards have admitted that players don't want to play hard in those games, and judging by the comments on social media, the fans haven't enjoyed the product.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has admittedly tried to make several tweaks to bring back excitement to what was once one of the most anticipated events in sports. That's why Jimmy Butler's latest joke on being an All-Star wasn't funny at all.
The Golden State Warriors shared an Instagram post to encourage their fans to vote for Butler as an All-Star. His reaction, however, left plenty to be desired.
"Don’t vote for me guys. Instead somebody create a GoFundMe to send me to Barbados," Butler commented on the post. "Thanks in advance. GO WARRIORS."
For starters, Butler's averages of 19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game for the 15-15 Warriors don't necessarily scream "All-Star" in today's high-scoring league. But more than that, this is just a blatant disrespect to what this game used to stand for and what the fans want to see.
This isn't the first time that Butler has taken a similar approach to the game, infamously even asking not to play. Of course, everybody deserves some time off, and playing NBA basketball is extremely taxing, but the only reason the players are even in a position to live their lavish lifestyles is because of the job they're getting paid to do.
The players have put the fans last, and there's no amount of money, perks, recognition or pats on the back the league can give them to change that attitude.
The fact that the league had to offer the players half a million dollars and a weekend in Las Vegas for them to care about regular-season games in November and December was already telling of the state of the game. Now, we have players openly campaigning not to be an All-Star, so perhaps the NBA should just get rid of the game as a whole.
