Mets' pursuit of Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman faces one major obstacle

The New York Mets' offseason has tested the fans' patience and belief in president of baseball operations David Stearns.

Losing two homegrown talents and fan favorites like Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil was a tough pill to swallow, and the front office will have to do plenty of heavy lifting to turn the narrative around. Of course, money shouldn't be an issue for Steve Cohen, but given the way this team is operating right now, it seems like it is ready to move on from that big-spending approach.

Even though the Mets are reportedly still in the mix to land both Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic just doesn't see that happening right now.

Mets' plans may not align with their targets' demands

"The Mets hold interest in adding a right-handed batter to balance out their lineup," Rosenthal wrote. "More likely they would find that player in a trade than free agency. Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette are the best right-handed batting free agents, but likely will command more years than the Mets want to tolerate."

Bichette, who recently expressed his willingness to move to second base after exceeding there during the World Series, is reportedly looking to get around five years and something between $130 million- $150 million.

Bregman, on the other hand, has reportedly drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks, so the Mets would have to go through a major bidding war to acquire his services.

It's still too early in this new era of Mets baseball to rush to conclusions. That being said, this new approach looks much more like a rebuild than the front office would like to admit.
