The Miami Dolphins are in the market for a new general manager and they have to get the hire right. The organization has not won a playoff game in more than 25 years, has missed the playoffs two years in a row and in 20 of the past 24 seasons. It is an organization stuck in mediocrity.
With the general manager search underway, they have reportedly turned to an intriguing name to help them find their person.
According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday evening, Hall of Fame quarterback and current "Monday Night Football" analyst Troy Aikman has been brought on as a consultant for the Dolphins' general manager search.
Aikman is not considered a candidate for the job, but instead will give the franchise an outside voice and view in its search.
The Dolphins are working to replace former general manager Chris Grier after he and the team parted ways earlier this season.
Aikman's work with the Dolphins reportedly will not prevent him from calling Saturday's Week 18 game between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
In some ways, bringing in somebody like Aikman makes a lot of sense for the Dolphins. By working as an analyst Aikman has a clear understanding of the modern game and the way teams are built and playing, and is also regularly talking to a wide range of people around the league. He is hearing different voices, different ideas and should have a sense for who is — and is not — a strong candidate. It also does not hurt to bring in an outside perspective that is looking at the situation with fresh eyes.
Given Miami's lack of success over the past two-plus decades it is pretty obvious they are not getting the job done. Maybe somebody from outside the organization can help.
