Overlooked Texas A&M remains atop conference with blowout road win

The Texas A&M Aggies may be getting closer to receiving the national respect they deserve.

On Saturday, Texas A&M defeated the Georgia Bulldogs (16-6, 4-5 in SEC) on the road, 92-77, for its third consecutive double-digit conference win. The Aggies jumped out to a 22-2 lead out of the gate and held on after the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to two by ending the game on a 23-10 run.

Despite leading the SEC at 7-1 and standing at 17-4 overall, Texas A&M has been conspicuously absent from the Associated Press top 25 poll all season.

That should soon change.

Texas A&M puts SEC on notice with blowout conference road win over Georgia

Texas A&M's only conference loss is an 87-82 double-overtime loss at Tennessee (14-6, 4-3 in SEC). It's won four in a row — tied for the SEC's longest win streak with the Auburn Tigers, which it defeated, 90-88, on the road earlier this month — by an average of 15.5 points.

Bucky McMillan, hired during the offseason after five seasons at Samford following Buzz Williams' departure for Maryland, has done an excellent job replacing nearly his entire roster. Per KenPom, Texas A&M ranks No. 339 in Division I in minutes continuity (0.6 percent), but McMillan has quickly developed one of the country's top offenses.

The Aggies entered Saturday sixth in the country in scoring (91.8 points per game), with five active players averaging at least 10 points per game. They're led by Rashaun Agee, originally a member of the 2019 recruiting class in his seventh year of eligibility, who is averaging 13.7 points per game.

He's one of multiple power conference transfers making an impact, having joined Texas A&M from USC. Senior guard Rylan Griffen, who is shooting 44.6 percent on three-point attempts, transferred from Kansas after beginning his collegiate career in the SEC at Alabama.

Backup guard Pop Isaacs spent first first two seasons at Texas A&M and junior year at Creighton before heading to College Station this offseason. Guard Marcus Hill went the junior college route out of high school but spent the 2024-25 season at NC State, where he started 25 games and appeared in 31 overall.

Guard Ruben Dominguez, 22, is part of the class of former overseas pros impacting the college game, having previously played in Spain, most recently for Bilbao in Liga ACB during the 2024-25 season.

The veteran core has been key to Texas A&M's strong start, and its wealth of power conference (or professional) experience will give it a chance of withstanding a tough upcoming slate.

Three of the Aggies' next four games are against ranked opponents, including two (No. 23 Alabama Crimson Tide, No. 18 Vanderbilt Commodores) on the road and the defending national champion No. 19 Florida Gators at home.

Texas A&M can prove its detractors wrong with statement wins over the next two weeks. But after Saturday, those numbers should be dwindling.
