Tommy Edman could be ready sooner than expected for Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman may be available sooner than expected.

Edman had undergone surgery on his right ankle due to ligament damage and to remove bone spurs. According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Edman will gradually build himself up during spring training to be ready for Opening Day.

A valuable utility man, Edman has spent time at second, third, short, center and left during his career. He is currently expected to be the Dodgers' primary second baseman, although he will likely spend time in center as well.

Tommy Edman can be multifaceted weapon for Dodgers if healthy

Edman's value went beyond his defensive versatility. He had been a solid all-around player for the Cardinals with some power and decent speed. Edman won a Gold Glove at second base in 2021 and was tied for fifth in the majors with seven runs saved at the position.

He has not been the same player over the past two seasons. Edman had surgery on his right wrist during the 2023-24 offseason, leading to a lengthy stint on the Injured List, during which time the Dodgers had acquired him. Ongoing right ankle and toe issues hindered Edman in 2025, leading to a disappointing .225/.274/.382 batting line in his 337 plate appearances. On the positive side, Edman tied his career high with 13 home runs in his limited time in the lineup.

The Dodgers were able to fill their few remaining holes by signing outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Edwin Diaz this offseason. Getting Edman back for Opening Day, or shortly thereafter, will help improve the lineup. If healthy, he can be another all-around weapon on an already formidable roster.
