Is the Sun setting in Connecticut?
On Monday, Sportico's Eben Novy-Williams and Kurt Badenhausen reported that Connecticut Sun ownership has hired investment bank Allen & Company to explore a sale of the franchise.

The team, which we valued at $80M last year, plays in the @WNBA's smallest market, have lagged in investment, and could definitely relocate.

The Sun "could definitely relocate," Novy-Williams wrote on social media.
The WNBA is in an expansion era, welcoming the Golden State Valkyries this season.
In 2026, the Toronto Tempo and Portland (team name TBA) will join as the league's 14th and 15th franchises. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expressed a desire in adding a 16th by 2028.
Several metro areas have expressed interest in adding a WNBA team, including Cleveland, Denver and Nashville. In February, Sports Business Journal reported that Cleveland is expected to be awarded the next expansion franchise and will revive the Cleveland Rockers, one of the league's original eight teams before ceasing operations following the 2003 season.
With more interested cities than available openings, the Sun have entered the seller's market at an opportune time.
Per Sportico, the Mohegan tribe, which owns the Sun, purchased the organization for a $10M fee in 2003. Last year, the franchise received a valuation of $80M.
While it's future is anything but certain, Connecticut's 2025 outlook is much clearer.
This offseason, the organization underwent a massive overhaul, parting with all five starters from last year's 28-12 team.
In February, the Sun dealt five-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas to the Mercury and guards Tyasha Harris and DiJonai Carrington, 2024's Most Improved Player, to the Wings in a four-team trade.
Center Brionna Jones (Dream) and forward DeWanna Bonner (Fever) signed elsewhere in free agency to complete the roster turnover, while head coach Stephanie White left to coach the Indiana Fever.
Per ESPNBet, the Sun's over-under win total for the 2025 regular season, which begins Friday, has been set at 11.5. Only the expansion Valkyries (8.5) have a lower projected total.
