Mavericks center Dereck Lively II reportedly undergoes foot surgery

Lively has dealt with discomfort throughout the past two seasons and missed a chunk of the 2024-25 season due to various ailments, including an ankle injury and injuries regarding his foot.

Despite missing time last season, Lively still showcased the immense potential that he also displayed in his rookie season. In only 36 games, the 7-foot-1 center averaged 8.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting over 70% from the field. His role as a rim protector and lob threat gave the Mavericks a much needed interior presence in the early portion of the season. 

While Lively’s young career has been limited due to availability, it has not been short on impact. He was a key contributor in Dallas’ NBA Finals run during the 2023-24 season with his highlight dunks, energy plays and rim protection, and he helped set the tone in several games. His ability to recover on defense, alter shots and rebound at a high level gave coach Jason Kidd’s defense a dimension it had lacked.

The Mavericks are entering an important season as they hope to bounce back and enter championship discussions after the shocking trade of star guard Luka Doncic. With stars like big man Anthony Davis and former Duke forward and first overall pick Cooper Flagg, the team is expected to be competitive in 2025. 

Lively will have to play a big role this upcoming season, so ensuring his long-term health will be a priority for the Mavericks.
