Can the Yankees sign Kyle Schwarber? This insider seems to think so

The thought of Kyle Schwarber in a New York Yankees uniform, standing 314 feet from the short porch in right field, is enough to make any Yankee fan’s heart flutter. Schwarber put on a power-hitting clinic in 2025, amassing an NL-leading total of 56 home runs while hitting .240/.365/.563 with the Philadelphia Phillies. His 132 RBI were the most in baseball.

If there was ever a player tailor-made for hitting in the Bronx, it would be Schwarber. His presence on deck would make any pitcher think twice about walking Aaron Judge. However, the sad fact for New York fans is that Schwarber is a DH-only type of player, and the Yankees already have one of those. Giancarlo Stanton, the oft-injured DH, presents a significant logistical challenge in making the Schwarber-pinstripe dream become a reality.

Still, one MLB insider isn’t so sure there is any deal-breaker. In an article for ESPN, Jesse Rogers listed the Yankees as a landing spot for Schwarber, replacing Cody Bellinger. He wrote this after discussing his seamless fit with the Phillies:

“[Schwarber] could also balance out the Yankees' lineup if Cody Bellinger walks. Can you imagine his home run totals with the short porch at Yankee Stadium?”

While Rogers’ comments ring true, he doesn’t touch on how the New York defense would look or his exact fit, just that his bat would be amazing in the Bronx. That said, can the Yankees make it work?

Looking over the Yankees’ options if they sign Kyle Schwarber

If the Yankees brought in Schwarber, this would force either him or Stanton into right field — or left, depending on stadium dimensions when on road trips. Schwarber played a total of 66 innings over eight games in left field during the regular season. Stanton played a total of 132 innings over 20 games in the corner outfield positions. Neither worked out too well on the diamond.

The nuclear option in a Schwarber-Yankees deal scenario would be dumping Stanton. While he still has plenty of power and was a hero in the Yankees’ 2024 World Series run, Stanton was downright disappointing this past postseason. However, his annual injuries combined with his hefty salary make him nearly unmovable. If the Yankees were to trade him, they would need to eat a large portion of his remaining contract, something the team would rather avoid.

Would Kyle Schwarber’s arrival in the Bronx be a dream come true? Yes, unequivocally. Would signing Schwarber be feasible for the Yankees? Probably not. With this in mind, signing Schwarber likely isn’t an option general manager Brian Cashman is considering — not that it isn’t an intriguing idea regardless of the challenges.
